Driving around town like an idiot for thirty minutes yielded nothing. He had gone by the library and the park, two of the places she often took Lily, but there was nothing, no sign of her. Did he actually think she would magically appear because he was looking for her?

Just then, Luke did a double-take. As he was about to drive past, he saw Sunny getting into a black SUV. He hit the brakes and swerved into the turning lane without signaling, eliciting an angry honk from a car behind him. His car bounced over a small pothole and cracked asphalt as he turned into Dillard’s auto mechanic and body shop. His brakes screeched to a halt in front of the SUV. Luke narrowed his gaze at Sunny, put the car in park, and let the engine idle. He wasn’t leaving until he knew what was going on.

Sunny got out of the vehicle and walked over to his car. He kept his gaze on her as he pushed the button to roll the window down.

“What are you doing here?” she murmured, a bit disgruntled.

Luke frowned. He’d been searching all over creation for the woman, and that was all she had to say. “I was looking for you,” he barked, not caring one iota if he made her uncomfortable. “I got worried when you didn’t show up.”

“I’m sorry. I rushed out of the house without my phone this morning, so I had no way to let you know I was going to be late because of car trouble.”

He warned her this would happen as he looked over at the SUV idling as well. Was the driver waiting for Sunny? Well, that was too bad. “Let me guess, the Pinto broke down.”

“Yes. And I left my phone at home,” she reiterated with a shaky voice. “And I had no way of reaching anyone because, thanks to technology, no one knows any phone numbers by heart anymore.” She was shouting. It was the first time Luke had ever heard her raise her voice.

“Why is she waiting?” Luke pointed to the SUV.

“Louann is going to take me home so I can get my phone. Then she’ll take me to your place. And she said she could pick me up later.”

No, she wasn’t. When he opened the car door, Sunny stepped back, frowning. Luke ignored her disapproval as he brushed past her and headed over to her friend’s SUV.

When Luke stopped at the driver’s side, Louann looked at him and rolled her eyes before letting down the window.

“I’m Luke.” He held out his hand. “I’ll take Sunny home to get her phone.”

The woman raised a perfectly arched brow, ignoring his outstretched hand. “Not so fast, Mr. Alpha Man. That’s up to Sunny.”
